About Montgomery

Welcome to Montgomery IL and its great outdoors! History of Montgomery

The village of Montgomery used to be called “Graystown”, which was named after its founder, Daniel Gray. Visiting the area in the fall of 1835, Daniel Gray immediately decided to settle here. In 1836, he built the first wooden house in the area after his family moved from the state of New York. The name “Montgomery” originated from Montgomery County in New York where Daniel Gray and the other settlers came from. Gray convinced the settlers to call the small village this name several years later.

He bought land grants from the federal government, resulting to his ownership of large expanses of the land. He also founded several companies which include a combine and fabrication shop, a foundry, a warehouse, and one of the best stone grain mills in the county. Gray was going to build more businesses when he died in 1855. Though he owned majority of the lots of the village, his heirs sold these lots as the village continue to grow.

In 1858, the village of Montgomery was incorporated as it constantly and steadily grew.

To this day, tourists and residents are able to learn more of the village’s history by visiting Settler’s Cottage Museum which is the house originally owned by its founder, Daniel Gray. The Settler’s Cottage project was accomplished by volunteer hours and immense community support, earning a Governor’s Home Town Award in 2011 for its fine example.

Annual Events

There is no lacking in activities for all ages in the Village of Montgomery. These are just a few of the many exciting opportunities that bring the residents together:

  • Montgomery Fest – This summer event is something that most residents look forward to as they get to enjoy a weekend of old-fashioned family fun. Held every second weekend of August, neighbors and friends enjoy a selection of activities which include musical performances, free pony rides and petting zoo, carnival rides, parades, a fishing derby and more.
  • Cemetery Walk – This is an annual event held every first Wednesday of October, at Riverside Cemetery. Hosted by the Village of Montgomery’s Historic Preservation Commission, guests are led through the cemetery to meet the “ghosts” of its early settlers.
  • Community Garage Sale – Each spring and fall, the Historic Preservation Commission sponsors Community Garage Sales where 100 homes actively participate.
  • Concerts in the Park – This fun-filled event is held during the months of June and July, on select Thursday evenings at Montgomery Park. Residents and tourists of all ages get to enjoy a perfect evening packed with various activities.

Things to Do

The Village of Montgomery prides itself with its great outdoors, and the plethora of outdoor activities readily available to its residents definitely adds to its charm.

Residents enjoy the neighborhood’s natural beauty while riding a bike through the many bike paths winding through the entire area. The Virgil Gilman Trail and the Fox River Trail are just a couple of the bike routes that residents get to travel on.

Fishing enthusiasts also get to enjoy various areas where they can enjoy a fishing adventure. Fox River is a popular fishing venue here, aside from the many retention ponds throughout the village.

Take delight in days spent at the various parks the Village of Montgomery has. Austin Park, Montgomery Park and several parks in the subdivisions of Lakewood Creek, Huntington Chase, Fairfield Way and Foxmoor offer both fun and relaxation to its residents of all ages.
