About La Grange

La Grange is a village in Cook County with a population of 15,550 (2010 census). It is located approximately 13 miles from the Chicago loop, relatively near the big city. The area around La Grange was first occupied in the 1830s by residents from Chicago wanting to move out west because of the city’s rise in population that resulted from its incorporation. The village was officially incorporated on June 11, 1879. La Grange was once a milk stop called Hazel Glen when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad came to town.

La Grange was named the most transit-friendly suburb in the entire Chicago area in 2012 by researchers at DePaul University. Their criteria included train service, the degree to which town centers come together around stations, walkability, and overall "community connectivity".

Downtown La Grange

Downtown La Grange is the core of the La Grange community offering its residents the opportunity to come together, mingle and celebrate. For many years, it was one of the liveliest shopping areas around the Chicago loop. This center of action is within walking distance from homes making it both accessible and distant enough to offer a great suburban living experience for residents.

Tom Livingston, the village president says that "City people who struggle with the normal suburbs find in La Grange a downtown that meets urban standards yet they can have a home with a driveway for their car.”

Walking through La Grange is like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse of how the village looked to its first residents. Architecture enthusiasts will find a treasure of enchanting Victorian homes with spacious balconies and lawns. The exceptionally maintained architecture rich with history earned national recognition in 1979 when placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
