Chicago Voted Best Big City in the U.S.

Chicago Ranked 3rd ost Active Place To Live

In terms of fame, Chicago is already on the map for its food and culture – from deep-dish pizzas and hot dogs, to the Cubs and Bears sports teams, and its nickname of “the Windy City.”  But now Chicago for the sixth time in a row, Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2022 has named the Windy City the Best Big City in the United States!

"It's no wonder Chicago is topping this list yet again. A world-class destination known for its impressive architecture, first-rate museums, brilliant chefs, and massive brewing scene, it’ll take several repeat visits to get through your list of must-dos. Most people start downtown—from the Magnificent Mile to the ritzy Gold Coast to funky Old Town—but there are 77 neighborhoods to explore, where you'll find cutting-edge restaurants, chilled-out corner bars, and, no matter where you go, some of the most pleasant people you'll find anywhere." - Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2022

Health and Wellness

As residents of Chicago already know, health and wellness plays a huge part of living in the city.  After all, there are numerous parks and greenspaces, bike and walking trails, and a very successful public transportation system.  With such hustle and bustle, and recreational pursuits to be had, it’s no wonder that the overall region of Chicagoland is considered to be a veritable place where people can more easily achieve better health.

The survey’s findings were based on where cities ranked according to the availability of healthy food, and instances of obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, and mental illnesses.  Of the 48 metropolitan locations polled, having easy access to more places via public transportation, or by walking or biking, coupled with the ability to obtain healthier foods made the most difference in residents’ quality of life being significantly better than in those areas where fewer opportunities to remain active exist.

Homes for Sale in Chicago

In Chicago and its suburbs, some of the best homes for sale available are those closest to public transportation, parks, trails, and community activities that fit their lifestyles – especially with singles in their early-to-mid 20’s, young families, and retirees 55 and older who all want the convenience of modern living and the corresponding amenities.  Such is the case with the West Loop and Lincoln Park areas of Chicago for millennials, and the Del Webb active adult communities of Carillon Club in Naperville and Carillon at Stonegate in Aurora.  Such places are known for their abundance of new family and senior housing units available, with access to shopping, dining, and entertainment around the corner.  In these locales, you don’t have to worry about driving to get to your destination if you don’t want to (or can’t).

Areas for Improvement

The high concentration of people throughout Chicagoland also poses some challenges they continue to improve upon, such as with roadways to create a safer place for pedestrians and bicyclists, and for residents to have more frequent access to healthy foods and grocery stores.  As Chicago continues to make strides in those areas, it will also continue to keep inspiring people to lead more active lifestyles and achieve their health and wellness goals.
